Department Of Glance

Introduction

The Department of Geology was established in the year 1985. Initially the department offered undergraduate courses with a combination of Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Physics and Mathematics. Subsequently, postgraduate courses were started in the year 2018.

Scope and Importance of Geology

Geology is a natural science, a branch of science that deals with scientific study of the Earth. Geology, as a whole encompasses origin, composition, age, history, agents, physical features, structures and tectonics various system of processes of the dynamic earth and study of rocks, minerals and fossils. Geology requires intensive field work to understand the earth hence it is also a fascinating and adventurous subject. Study of Geology provides understanding about the earth in a systematic and organized way and gives applied knowledge to explore the earth resources such as minerals, metals, hydrocarbons, nuclear minerals and ground water. It provides Geotechnical know-how to resolve problems related to civil engineering projects like Dams, Canals, Highway & bridges and a Geologists also deal in the issues related to water, environment & natural hazards and its management. Geology can be a very exciting and worthwhile career. There are bright prospects for the students holding Post-Graduate degree in Geology. They can work in academic field as well as Geoscientists in various Central and State Government, Public-,private and Multinational Organizations such as Geological Survey of India (GSI), Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Coal India Limited (CIL), Steel Authority India Limited (SAIL), Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL), National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), Atomic Mineral Division of DAE, Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), State Geology and Mining departments and in Cement and Fertilizer plants. Geology also gives self-employment opportunities like Mine Owner, Mining planner & consultant, Ground water exploration consultant and Geotechnical consultant. Newly emerging branch of Geoinformatics, and Remote Sensing in Geology gives wide career opportunities to the students in various Public-private sectors and Multinational Organizations.

Aims

Crafting students; competent enough to serve the Nation as good citizen and excellent geo-professionals, with scientific and technical approach.

OBJECTIVES

Provide knowledge of Geology to students through class room teaching, practical and field studies with available techniques. The department will try to educate them from class room to field in geology.
